Single women of Reddit, how do you feel about the Union fall in the battle of Frederiksberg, Virginia on December 11, 1862, during Ambrose Burnside's invasion into confederate held land?

  1. The Union army really was a "Lions led by Donkeys" situation pretty much right up to 1863 when Grant and Sherman were placed in charge after Vicksburg.

  2. Well yeah, but without this particular incompetent general we wouldn't have the term sideburns for that facial hair. The fact that men died to give us that term is a sacrifice we should all appreciate.

  3. Don’t know if this is true, but I read years ago that Lincoln once described Burnside has having a talent for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

  4. This battle gave Lee his reputation, but it was really Burnside’s bungled assault plan that lost this battle for the union and probably extended the war by a couple years.

  5. Considering the Union made an incredible bounce back after that, and in the end won, we should be looking in to the after actions for tactics we can use to win the political battle for women's rights. Today we fell, but we must not stop fighting for freedom.

  6. Let the panties hit the floor. Let the panties hit the floor. Let the PANTIES HIT THE FLOOR. LET THE PANTIES HIT THE FLOOR! LET THE PANTIES HIT FLOOR!!! LET THE PANTIES HIT THE… FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!!!!!

  7. Burnside is one of those characters where the author was a little too keen to be seen as clever. I mean, Remus Lupin? Of course he's a werewolf! Surius Black? Of couse he's big black dog!

  8. I feel it was in a moral gray area but ultimately the greater good, even taking into account Burnside's politics and troubling motivations. It's argued what happened was inevitable but I do not think this is supported by the context we have

  9. Hahaha OK the image of a tired Lincoln just wanting to unwind after a long day, going to Reddit, then finding a question about the battle.

  10. Honestly, Burnside may have stood a chance if communications were better and if Burnside moved his troops faster.

  11. Every time I see Burnside mentioned I have to laugh, because I remember that at his wedding to Lottie Moon, when the preacher asked her if she took him as her husband, she yelled "no siree Bob!" and ran off.

  12. Not really interested, as it was laundry day and I had way too many chores to do to pay much attention. Now that new thing... that pump to get water easier... THAT I'm interested in.

  13. It sucks but it is providing a great topic for my MA thesis so there’s that. And 150 odd years later, it’s really helping keep a really cute small city afloat by tourism
