I'm genuinely flabbergasted.

  1. Jack probably feels as if it is “their” money since they are engaged to be married.

  2. What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine.

  3. If you are out of a job and can't afford to go out for lunch... I think there is a solution for that... you don't go out for lunch! lol

  4. Yes, but what I don't want to not go out for lunch?

  5. Never would, I worked as a scientist and have scientist friends and none of us "believe in science" science is a methodology for us to try and understand the material world, it's not a belief system, the only thing you have to believe is that there is a material world that can be observed and unserstood and that, even if it is illusory, is self evident. You can study it and understand it.

  6. To pick a nit, you also have to believe that there is regularity to the world. That is, that if you do the same exact thing more than once, the same result will occur. If the results of an event were random instead of deterministic, then it would not be possible to study the world in a systematic fashion.

  7. I think you don't know what a straw man is.

  8. 'Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forward.'

  9. There's a great, short book called Times Arrow by Martin Amis. In the book, the main character dies at the very start. At the moment of death, a new consciousness comes into existence in his head and experiences the guy's life backwards, without being able to do anything or access the guy's thoughts, and without even knowing that he's seeing life backwards.

  10. I liked the new uses of gateways in the last couple books; in particular, as soon as we got to see how gateways worked much earlier on, my first thought was "oh cool, they can use a gateway placed in the sky to look down on battles in real time". But then no one had the idea until the very end.

  11. To be fair, the Aes Sedai strongly discouraged their students from experimenting with the power, because of the danger of burning out or killing yourself or others. They trained to novices and accepted in this regard so strongly that the vast majority of Aes Sedai never even tried to create new weaves.

  12. It seems obvious to us but them not even considering it seems very reasonable. IRL the Romans had invented a crude kind of steam engine but it was an aberrant curiosity they never innovated on. The extremely obvious innovations in hindsight are often missed until well after the original discovery.

  13. I think the accepted explanation for the Roman Stan engine (though I'm pretty sure it was actually Greek) is that exploiting it to build a working engine requires the ability to tool some highly refined components that they just didn't have.

  14. I once got trapped on the last screen that has all the apps as a menu. I couldn't get out of it. I've had to two years and I'm still never certain how to change the volume of my ringer. It took a year before I learned there is a physical switch to turn the ringer off. If I delete an app on the home screen, it shifts everything up, and my muscle memory gets completely messed up. I hate that depending on where I pull down from the top, I get a different menu.

  15. Ok, serious question here... You really had a device you carried around with you and handled daily for over a year before noticing a physical switch on the side of it, and decided to try to figure out what it does?

  16. It was already set up and had a case on it when I got it. Work was so stressful, I never really had a chance to figure out the finer things while I was trying not to drown. I only figured out it was there because suddenly my phone wasn't making a sound, and I couldn't find a way to turn it on in the settings. I finally asked someone who chooses iPhones, and she pointed the switch out to me.

  17. Fair enough. Though you did know going forward that iphones have had a physical silence switch for a long time.

  18. Um... Yes we are!! Every man likes large boobs. Most every man likes a nice round butt.

  19. I guess it depends on how crowded it is but I think it's fine to play music at the beach. It's a beach.

  20. I think it's fine to play music on a bus. It's a bus.

  21. Trump: Your honor, we need a special master to determine if the documents are declassified, privileged, or personal property

  22. I got a 1650 super for a little under 200, was legit tracking it on Amazon and it went away in like 30 minutes

  23. Well, that was both hysterical and deeply disturbing.

  24. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/09/trump-judge-dearie-mar-a-lago-special-master-fail.html

  25. People who lack integrity and principles can't understand people who don't, and just assume that everyone is as callous and unethical as they are.

  26. Notice that the lawyers have never actually said that he declassified the documents, because that's a provably false statement, and that will get you slapped with sanctions and possibly get you disbarred.

  27. He can sign that pardon if he likes but it would up to the DoJ in the first instance to decide whether or not to ignore it and prosecute him anyway. The courts would decide if the pardon was legitimate. And sure, it might get appealed all the way to the currently conservatively-biased Supreme Court. It's instinctive to suggest they would have a majority upholding his self pardon, but I wouldn't be so sure - this might be a bridge too far for even some of the Conservative judges on that court; that the president is without question above the law and is the only person who can pass judgement on himself. That would totally undermine the judicial system and the power of the Supreme Court itself.

  28. That is one interpretation, but it is certainly not clear cut - there are many articles out there that discuss the debate among legal experts on this.

  29. I understand that counter argument, and I've seen it before.

  30. Why does it feel like the default response for the right is to threaten someone anytime they don't like something?

  31. Because it is, but if you go read

  32. I just don’t understand why the US is like this? Like if the SSN is different how could it possibly be merged?!

  33. SSNs are not ID numbers, you are not required to have one if you aren't paying social security taxes, and not everyone in the US has one; the Amish come to mind as an example of a group that tends not to have them.

  34. Yeah, but what about Satan using it to track you?

  35. Reddits normalization of shitting yourself is disgusting and needs to stop.

  36. I ain't saying it's normal, but they had to remove my gallbladder two years ago, and now every fart is a gamble, and the house has a massive edge.

  37. I remember a guy who said he just never wipes. It smells a bit and every couple of months he gets an arsecrack infection and needs to go to the doctors but its not too bad. He said the doctor needs to force open his butt-cheeks and the sticky mess of shit and puss and infected flesh is like the inside of a grilled-cheese sandwich. The doctor gives him a sedative and scrapes it all out then he's good for another few months.

  38. ... I want to get off Mr. Bones Wild Ride.

  39. I've seen 6 men doing an anal sex train with the first guy in line getting a reach around that was straighter than that spine.

  40. A man is sentenced to death, and the judge tells him that he will be executed at precisely noon on some day in the next 7 days, but the day will be a surprise to him. They lead the man back to his cell, and he's just giddy, because he realizes that the judges sentence cannot be carried out as ordered.

  41. You think AMD won't want the overpriced money?

  42. I'm not offended, I already told you BOTH sides are trash.

  43. They were looking kinda dumb with their fingers and their thumb in the shape of a Q on their forehead.,

  44. Well, the indictments start coming and they don't stop coming

  45. Just cut out the middle man and become a pedophile herself. I mean, who would know?

  46. I can't decide if you're a fucking genius, or a depraved weirdo.
