TL;DR: The fact that those issues existing before social media is a terrible argument because although it's true, you can't deny social media made those issues a lot worse.
Social Media made things worse. Sure.
My argument is that social network successfully convinced you that you need the bad to have the good that they are offering while the reality is that every social network is manipulating you in exactly the same way. Social network are designed the get your attention NOT for letting you communicate with other people, that is just a byproduct. The problem is that the byproduct is enough for the majority of people.
Yes, social media is designed to get your attention. It's also an advertising platform to sell you shit.
